  • 《A Man, A Village, A Museum》(李牧:仇庄计划)

CASO is thrilled to host writer and curator Gu Ling, whose unique bilingual piece, A Conversation at an Ordinary Art Shop | The Survival Kit of Arbre in a Glocal Contemporary Art Ecology in China in Future Projects, the reader of 2022-2023 inaugural De Ying Curatorial Research Fellowship, develops an autobiographical style, sharing her insights on the contemporary art ecology and the situation of the individual practitioner, and drawing from her extensive experience both within and outside of institutions.

Karen Smith, Head of the De Ying Curatorial Research Fellowship, introduced her writing in the reader’s foreword, saying,’Gu Ling chooses the mechanism of a conversation (for the following reasons). Firstly, it allows Ling to place herself in the discussion and, thereby, to reference the perspective she gained through her personal experience within various institutional roles. This discursive mechanism allows her to question herself within the context of individual roles. Second, this is a format that the founders of independent small spaces established as a mode for discussing its program for their audience, as part of their publication format. Thus, her approach makes a neatly reflective rejoinder.’

Join us for an engaging discussion as Gu Ling shares her thoughts on the process of writing in this structured text of more than 50,000 words in Chinese and nearly 40,000 words in English. The topics explored are diverse, including urbanization, labor, the alienation of the human being, the creation of value, the relationship between artwork and everyday life, institutionalization, independence, and community. We look forward to your active participation in this dialogue.

Gu Ling has also selected 13 copies of publications, magazines, and brochures as a set of archives to display in CASO Nantou for two weeks, most of which she has participated in editing or writing. Among them, CASO supported the layout and production of the “befitting” zine. Here’s the list of the displaying archives:
