Just like being startled or drifting into sleep, if we treat “calm” as an ordinary verb—seemingly invented yet vivid—it captures how, in today’s restless urban life, tranquility is often hard-won and even requires deliberate effort.
In Cao Xiang’s observations and captures of city routines, there lie repeated instances of ”make calm.” Amidst the triviality of everyday motions, he strives to fix his gaze on what stirs the soul.
Many parts of Hong Kong bear traces of time, like a well-worn tool that feels effortless in hand.
Perhaps because this familiarity breeds speed, everyone moves with urgency: swiping through subway turnstiles, striding briskly down streets, or ordering dim sum in cha chaan tengs with mechanical efficiency. Hesitating too long over hot or iced milk tea might disrupt the boss lady’s rhythm.
Even the old-style elevators in many buildings, built to last, seem to echo this tempo. Beneath the surface-level haste, the city’s accumulated wear and tear has sedimented into a tangible sense of rootedness.
